When I was a little kid growing up in Hawaii, I was fortunate enough to go to my local school auditorium and see a Bruce Brown surf movie. Bruce was there in person doing a live narration that kept you spellbound for an hour and a half. The experience still lives larger than life in me to this day, as Bruce giving his offbeat style of humour throughout was something you never forgot.

In 1992, I was invited to work with Bruce, his son Dana, and Director of Photography, the legendary Hollywood lensman Mike Hoover, on the sequel Endless Summer 2. On that production I was part of the small location team for the Indonesian, Fijian, and Australian sequences in the show. It was a fantastic experience that I felt honoured to be a part of.

You can imagine my stoke when I heard that they were going to do another and I got a call asking if I'd like to do camera work for this new program. Although not "The Endless Summer III", it is as close to that as ever. Bruce has become the Executive Producer and will contribute his stoke and vibe to the finished product. However, it is all still in the family, as his son Dana has taken over directorial duties. Dana, an award winning film maker himself, has put together a positive creative team that is travelling around the world shooting great stories on and about surfing.

This time around Dana has joined forces with a great DOP named John Paul Beeghly. Together they have produced sequences of some unique characters of the sport. The title of the program is called "Liquid" and it is in the same vein of Bruce's motorcycle classic "On Any Sunday" (released mid 70's) where they focus on interesting people who surf.

They have already done sequences of surfers who ride on the Great Lakes of Michigan USA, surfers in Texas who ride the wake of Oil Tankers in Texas, and a guy who has been surfing everyday for the past 20 years! There will also be sequences of Big Wave tow surfing in Hawaii, the classic day at the newly discovered Cortez Bank off of San Diego, and the tidal bore wave in Wales that comes once a year that you can ride for over 6 miles. There will be sequences of guys, gals, kids and one and all in this program guaranteed to become another Classic.

On this part of the production I travelled to Western Australia where Dana is doing a profile on Taj Burrow. During the 8 days of filming we spent time with Taj and his parents surfing around his home town of Yallingup. Although the surf was not epic, we had several surfs where Taj made the ordinary conditions seem quite good.

The "Liquid" crew will continue shooting Taj in contests in California and Hawaii for the rest of the year. For me, I've been invited to join Dana and the gang for the next big trip to Tahiti. We will be filming there for 10 days. We will bring this site up to date shortly thereafter.
