A Paddle Out Celebration Like Never Before
The global surf community will gather for a day celebration at Avalon Beach, Sydney, Australia this Saturday, July 5th, to honour the extraordinary life of legendary surf filmmaker Jack McCoy.
The event will feature the first ever live broadcast of a paddle out ceremony, complete with a pre-show featuring Nick Carroll, Mark Occhilupo and Laura Enever who will be honouring Jack’s life and continued legacy of innovation - this time, from above.
World champions Layne Beachley and Tom Carroll will be leading the paddle out proceedings with thousands travelling from across the globe to come together and pay tribute to the ambassador of aloha and surf culture.
Following the procession, the family has invited everyone to join them at Avalon Bowlo to celebrate. The outdoor event will feature the Surfers For Climate’s outdoor cinema which will be playing some of McCoy’s most iconic films. Artists such as Yothu Yindi, Ziggy Alberts, The Beautiful Girls, Phil Jamieson and members of Ganggajang and The Angels will perform throughout the day in tribute to McCoy’s passion for music, many of whom were close friends and featured throughout his 25 feature films.
All proceeds from the day will be go towards Surfrider, Surfers for Climate and the Jack McCoy Aloha Foundation – formed to preserve and develop McCoy’s archive, support upcoming film makers, and assist in the fight against the environmental crisis – ensuring McCoy’s legacy lives on for generations to come.
“The response since dad passed has been beyond imaginable and we thank everyone so much for wrapping their arms around us. Dad always taught us to take the opportunity to make the most our of a bad situation.
“It was his wish for us to continue his legacy by gathering each generation of the surfing tribe to talk story and hopefully touch move and inspire future generations to pick up a camera, to ride a wave, or help save our planet by supporting the environmental groups who dad dedicated his life to ensure he left the world in a better place for his grandchildren.” Says’ Indiana McCoy
Mark it down, spread the word and get your favourite aloha shirt pressed. This will be one for the ages.
